Local Restaurants

There are several good places to eat within 10 minutes of the house, for supper close to home.  Four are only a couple of fields away – 2 in each of the neighbouring landholdings; at Medieval borgo Locanda L’Amorosa and within the historic Organic Beef ‘Ranch’ and hunting estate, Tenuta La Fratta. Amorosa despite being only 1km we don’t consider walk-able for safety / comfort reasons as the road is narrow and has no footpath. Both of these locations are within clear sight of the house and with their vineyards, hay bales, wheat fields and cypress trees make up the beautiful landscape that surrounds us. For Lunch out whilst exploring (or over 25 minutes away) there are many genuinely excellent places to eat out around these parts…

PLACES TO EAT OUT WITHIN 10 MINUTES OF THE HOUSE It is wise to book early on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

LA TORAIA at La Fratta Ranch. 1 minute by car, 1.5km (open Wed/Thursday through Sunday). Simple but stylish steakhouse right on the ranch – set in the very historic Bull House. We love the atmosphere at this place.  Lively but laid back. Good pastas, great organic grass fed beef & chacuterie (theirs) good/reasonably priced wine list.  Principally for carnivores but there’s one vegetarian dish as well as a few non-meaty pastas. Specials board is interesting. Service is faster with an early table…popular and will be very busy around 9. Lunch served on weekends only 12.30 – 15.00    Dinner 19.30 – 22.30

Also within the territory of La Fratta, the DUE APOSTOLI.  The farm worker’s traditional canteen serving excellent Pizza, hearty Pasta and some main dishes.  Good prices friendly service and nice location.

HOW TO GET THERE from the house turn right onto the main road and then second left (600M) into the farm “La Fratta” The Toraia is at the end of the unlit clay road, head to the right (if on foot) into the centre of the farm.  If driving follow signs ‘Due Apostoli’ which will take you there.

RISTORANTE DAVIDE CANELLA at Locanda Amorosa. 1 minute by car but we don’t consider it walk able. A local acclaimed chef.  Good food and service, intimate lighting and feel, lovely outside or in. Closed on Monday

Also within the Borgo L’Amorosa find the AMOROSA OSTERIA – very locally sourced, apparently simple, excellent dishes. Not inexpensive, but very very good.  Super service and very beautiful location.  Head to Amorosa and look for the Osteria right next to the Chapel.

A little further away…

IL FORCILLO, Sinalunga5 Minutes by car. The place to head to if you are looking for the Trattoria feel. The locals love it. Extensive menu and not much English spoken but lively and friendly. Aunties and Grandma take care of the guests in the restaurant whilst the Uncles and Sons cook. Plastic flowers, good and bad art on the walls. Super atmosphere inside, prices are good. Closed Sunday and Monday 20.00 / 21.30

RELAIS LA LEOPOLDINA, Bettolle, 10 minutes by car. Tuscan classic and modern, locally sourced produce. Refined and comfortable. Nice situation for dining outside. Superb service and locally renowned chef, Walter Readelli. Everything of the very best quality. Changing menu with seasonal focus, of note the wonderful cheese selection and chocolate tasting plate from Vestri (see below) both recommended! Recently has won an award for the Wine Menu.  Lunch and Dinner every day.

LE MACINE, Torrita di Siena, 10 minutes’ drive PIZZA plus other Tuscan dishes available. Friendly and informal, cosy interior with vaulted ceilings typical for the area.  Pizza is recommended, thin and crispy and baked in a wood oven as it should be.  Sitting in the main room you can see the pizza chef at work. This place is high up overlooking the valley so long long views to be had if dining on the pretty terrace in daylight. Loc. Palazzeta, Torrita Di Siena. (Hidden away behind a hotel, the ‘Rotelle’ make sure to turn left when facing the hotel and head a few more metres up the hill). Closed on Wednesdays. Pizza evenings only.

Do you need to book ahead for restaurants in our area? – yes and no… Good restaurants fill up ! if you’re very sure you want to eat at Forcillo or Toraia on a Friday night for example, these places fill up with ‘local’ diners (in truth people are driving from over half an hour away to eat at the Toraia). Places where you can eat outside – such as Relais La Leopoldina, or Ristorante Davide Canella will tend to have space on fine evenings (inside) if you have not booked early, but in case of cool / wet weather be full.  So we advise our guests to make the decision in the morning for evening meals on weekends.  Sunday Lunch is also immensely important in Italy and so must be booked ahead – probably by Saturday am.  Some places – such as La Bandita Townhouse should always be booked.  La Bandita Townhouse Cafe in Pienza is in the pretty town centre of Pienza which is always popular in the Summer and can be very busy on weekends.  We advise guests heading out to Pienza in the morning to decide right away if they want to dine at the Townhouse Cafe, taking a peek at the menu and the place as they pass on their way into town, booking right then and there if interested.  As town gets busy so do the restaurants.  Whilst there are many good places to eat in Pienza we personally love the Bandita Townhouse Cafe and La Buca Delle Fate.  In recent months guests have been really enjoying the Terrazza Val D’Orcia and the restaurant at the hotel Il Chiostro, both the latter having super views.  Always tell the restaurants that you are staying at Siena House – but at Buca Delle Fate you could also tell them ‘Amanda’ Sent you ! (we will explain why when you are here!).

We will always recommend your letting us book tables for you, it’s significant in making sure that you receive the very best treatment. This is a dynamic list; we pay close attention to our guest’s dining experience during the Summer months as well as visiting these spots during the off season, keeping our recommends ‘up to date’.  We can help you in house with recommends for special experience / quality / value places to eat whilst you are out exploring – but our favourite spots are also quoted in the individual destination pages in the ‘Places we love’ section of the Location Menu.

WORD OF MOUTH Siena House is in a non touristy immediate area where you can dine in excellent restaurants at good prices and eat in a room full of local diners.
